Schooling is mandatory

  • All children and young people are required to attend school in Norway. This means that all children living in Norway have the right to ten years of primary and lower secondary education.
  • Children start school the year they turn six.
  • All young people and many adults have the right to an upper secondary education.
  • Public colleges and universities are free of charge.
  • Attending kindergarten is not mandatory, but most children enter kindergarten at the age of 1 or 2 years.
