Discuss the term sustainable development. What does it mean in practice? What does it mean for individuals?
Can you give any examples of sustainable development?
Can you give any examples of development that is not sustainable?

At the end of the 1980s, the term sustainable development was incorporated in the languages of the world. The World Commission on Environment and Development was established by the UN in 1983. It was led by former Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland, and was thus often referred to as the Brundtland Commission. The Commission submitted its report in 1987, and the term sustainable development was a thread throughout.

Sustainable development is social development that ensures people’s consumption needs are met, at the same time that we do not spoil the opportunities of the generations to come.
