Sustainable development
The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a common plan for sustainable development in the whole world. Their goal is to eradicate poverty, combat different types of inequality and stop climate change by 2030.
Climate change
The weather and the climate are not the same thing. The weather is what we see every day when we are outside or look out of the window, while the climate is the average weather measured over a long period. Over the past 100 years, major changes have taken place in the earth’s climate. Most of the world’s climate researchers believe that human CO2 emissions are behind the rapid and far-reaching changes we see today.
The changes we are experiencing include:
- The earth’s temperature is rising.
- The ocean is rising and becoming more acidic.
- The ice is melting.
- There is more varied precipitation and more extreme weather.
Renewable resources
Renewable resources is a term that describes self-renewing natural resources. People can draw on these resources, and if exploited properly, they are not used up.
Examples of renewable resources:
- animals, trees and plants
- precipitation, wind and water
- sunshine
Examples of non-renewable resources:
- oil
- gas
- coal
Locally produced food
Locally produced food is produced near the consumer When food is produced locally, there is less need for transport and we thus save a lot of greenhouse gas emissions. It is also easier to control the production of locally produced food. This may concern crop sprays, the use of antibiotics in the meat and fish industry and animal welfare conditions.
Talk together
- Talk about climate change. How is it affecting your home country? How is it affecting Norway?
- Talk about renewable resources. What happens when people use these resources up more quickly than the rate at which nature is able to renew them?
- Talk about the advantages and disadvantages of locally produced food.
- Is it important for a country to be self-sufficient? Why or why not?
- Talk about the UN SDGs. Do you think some of them are more important than others? Does the whole world agree on this plan?
