Norwegian language tuition
The goal is for everyone who lives in Norway to master Norwegian. A common language helps to foster community and makes integration easier. Depending on the residence permit foreign nationals are granted in Norway, those who settle here will have different options with respect to Norwegian language tuition. Some are entitled to free Norwegian language tuition and are obliged to complete it. Others have an obligation to take Norwegian language tuition, but have to pay for it themselves.
How long Norwegian language tuition shall take for those who have the right and obligation to take it depends on the Norwegian language level specified for the individual. The levels are divided into A1, A2, B1 and B2 in accordance with the European Framework of Reference for Languages.
The target level is generally based on the participant’s educational background upon arrival in Norway. The higher the level of education, the higher the target. The target can be adjusted in the process in accordance with the participant’s progress. All Norwegian language tuition must be concluded within three years. There is an 18-month limit for people with upper secondary or higher education. The tuition concludes with a test in Norwegian to document the language level attained by the participant.
How do you learn Norwegian?
There are many ways to learn the language and many different arenas where you can learn it. Most people take a Norwegian language course because they want organised and systematic tuition. People who live in Norway will also be constantly surrounded by the Norwegian language. They will hear people talking Norwegian on the bus and at the shop, and will hear and see it on the TV, radio, newspaper and social media. People who have children will hear them talking Norwegian with their friends, and they must speak Norwegian to kindergarten staff or teachers.
People who are active and keen will find lots of opportunities for practising Norwegian every day. Those who accept the offer of a language placement in a workplace get a unique opportunity to learn the language in a natural setting.
