Rules for residence
Rules for residence
An immigrant is a person who was born abroad, but lives in Norway. Immigrants in Norway have different residence permits and different rights.
- Immigrants from EU/EEA countries can work in Norway without applying for a residence permit, but they must register with the police. This is done digitally.
- Resettlement refugees or quota refugees come to Norway in agreement with the UNHCR (UN). They receive a temporary residence permit when they come to Norway.
- A person who is persecuted in their home country because of race, religion, nationality, sexual orientation or political work, can be granted asylum in Norway. Asylum seekers come to Norway themselves and apply for asylum. Their application can be rejected or they can be granted asylum/residence on grounds of strong humanitarian considerations.
- Family members of persons with a residence permit in Norway can apply for family reunification.
Persons who have been granted asylum/residence on grounds of strong humanitarian considerations, and resettlement refugees, are known as refugees.
People are granted a temporary residence permit for their first three or five years in Norway. The permit generally has to be renewed every year. After three or five years, you can apply for a permanent residence permit. After six, seven or eight years, you can apply for Norwegian citizenship.
