Bringing up children
Bringing up children can differ in different families, societies and cultures. Parents have chief responsibility for bringing up their children, although they are also influenced by other adults in kindergarten, school and leisure activities. The goal of bringing up children, among other things, is to teach them to participate in society, to give them good fundamental values, and to enable them to live good lives.
Parents want to spend a lot of time with their children, and they want to know a lot about what their children do at times when they are not together with them. Good cooperation with kindergarten and school is therefore a priority for parents. Most parents also consider it important to know their children's friends and their parents.
Ideas about how children should be brought up have changed. Children used to be regarded as ‘small adults’, and they often had to work to contribute to their family’s income. Today, childhood is a time of play and learning, and we do not make the same demands of children as before.
Children bring a lot of joy and are a big responsibility, but most parents sometimes find bringing up children difficult. Children don’t always do what their parents want them to, and some time parents are exhausted, angry and dejected. In such situations, they can seek advice from people who know a lot about the subject, talk to other parents, read books or find information online. Thinking through problematic situations before they arise is a good idea.
