The Introduction programme and the Integration Act
The Introduction programme and the Integration Act
The object of the introduction programme is
- to give the participants basic Norwegian language skills
- to give the participants basic insight into Norwegian society
- to prepare the participants for employment or education
The authorities in Norway realise that it is difficult for people to find a job and support themselves when they first come to a new country. The Norwegian parliament, the Storting, thus adopted an act known as the Integration Act. Among other things, this act tasks Norwegian municipalities with offering the introduction programme to refugees.
In this programme, the participants learn the Norwegian language and gain knowledge and training in Norwegian society and the Norwegian labour market. The intention of the programme is for the participants to enter the labour market or education when they have completed the programme. The programme can last between three months and three years, depending on the person’s previous schooling and experience. Those who participate in the programme receive financial support.
The introduction programme shall comprise
- Norwegian language tuition
- help to master life in a new country
- parental guidance (for those with children under 18)
- content relating to work or education
